Question #2

What’s your favorite age for a historical heroine? Do you find yourself drawn to books with virgins, or do you like reading about experienced heroines?

  1. Evangeline Says:

Experienced, because the way virgins are portrayed in romances annoy me(hmm…another cliche that I can twist hehe). And I tend not to have a true age like or dislike because life was different back then. There could be a mature 16 year old and an immature 29 year old. It was all about outlook and life circumstances.

  2. Alyssa Says:

I lik reading about historical heroines in their late 20s. Perhaps because of my age, I love to see mid-30s heroines, too, but they are less common. I can read and enjoy younger heroines, but I appreciate them more when they are older or act more mature than one might expect of a younger heroine.

As for virginal vs. experienced heroines, it all depends on how they are presented. Either one is usually fine, though widowed virgins always seem odd.

  3. Lydia Says:

I am not terribly picky about age, either writing or reading. As a writer of historicals, if my character get in bed quickly, they have to have a darned good reason for it!

  4. Melissa Says:

    Hi Lydia,
Definitely experienced! I like a heroine to be 16 or older. It drives me crazy when a heroine has no clue about sex.

  5. terri shaw Says:

Age really isn’t a factor but I do prefer the more experienced fiesty heroines who know what they want and how to get it.

  6. Jennifer Says:

While age is not really an issue, I do prefer them to be at least 20 for the purpose of maturity. I also prefer to read about experienced heroines. I don’t mind if the character is a virgin if it is written well and she is not stupid or naive.

  7. Kim Says:

I don’t really have a preference in age of the heroine in the story, but I tend to like when the hero is older. I like the virginal or less experienced heroines. The instructional scenes are always so enjoyable to read.

  8. Julia Says:

I like heroines of different ages, but I prefer those that are in their 20s or 30s and I like when they have flaws. I don’t care much for the perfect ones. I also love stories with experienced heroines and particularly love when the hero is the inexperienced one. I like virginal heroines too, but prefer when they are spinters or wallflowers and until the hero nobody has really seen or discovered them.

  9. BJ Deese Says:

I like heroines to be around my age (25). For historicals, I don’t mind them younger. Virgins are fine with me, as long as it’s appropriate for the story and setting.
