My favorite setting is generally the one I am reading at the moment. Fickle, huh?
Seriously, though. I love reading about a variety of settings. I don’t like to limit myself to just a few. I will read just about anything. I do like novels set in England, Ireland, or Scotland, though….either contemporary or historical.
If the story is good the setting is good; I love settings on a ranch, at a bed and breakfast in a
moutain resort, in a ski lodge, at a resort and on
and on.
Hi Dianne,
I love many settings. A few of my favorites are England, Scotland, the South, any tropical environment, the mountains, …. I’ll just stop now lol. For me, if the story is a good one I will read it. Setting is important too, but I have read great books with a great variety of settings. I guess the most important thing about the setting to me is how vividly it is portrayed.
I like a variety of settings. It could be the southern US or southern France, New York or New Mexico…it doesn’t really matter to me. I like the mountains, the old west, the Highlands, a ship in the middle of the ocean, Big Cities and Small Towns, and so on. There is not just one that is my favorite. I like reading about a variety of places. It makes me feel like I am traveling. LOL. However, setting is not as important to me as the story itself is. I love a good story no matter where it is set.
I don’t think I’ve ever set a book in the winter. All those clothes to tend with.
I love writing about the the south and Southern ways and the food…holy cow, the food. No one cooks like in the South.
Any place that has a unique flavor is fun, I guess that’s why Texas is used so much.
I think my next books will be set in Savannah. I looove Savannah!
Hugs to all of you who respond.
Dianne
Jennifer,
What part of GA are you in? I am in Ga, too….Are you familiar with Pine Mountain and Callaway Gardens? I am close to there. It is a beautiful resort type area.
Y’all should check it out on the web! (I don’t work there, I promise!) :0)
I agree, Savannah is lovely!
HI Dianne! I don’t have a particular favorite setting. I think each book I read is exciting b/c usually the setting has changed. Its fun to read about England, Scotland, and then areas in the US from any city to a small town in the country. I have learned a lot about many places I have never been to!!
Jennifer Yates, I visited Stone Mountain about 7 years ago. I had a great time and loved the scenery..but I am biased b/c I am defintely a nature girl!!! Give me trees, lakes, and wide open spaces and I am happy
Talking to you all about different places makes me want to go on vacation. I love the ocean.
I’ve never been to Hawaii…maybe one of these days.
Savannah is great for ghost stories. We went on a haunted tour when we were last there and heard about all the ghosts.
I intend to use them in my next book!
I’m thinking the pirate house.
Pirates are fun…I’m sure they weren’t back in the day but from the safety of my computer they rock!
Dianne
A story on a farm or acreage is good; the way of life can be more serene. The evenings are beautiful with the stars shining and the moon and in the distance coyotes can be heard howling.
Hi Dianne. It’s nice to see you here. I don’t have a favorite setting. If the story is a good one then any setting will do although I do enjoy reading stories set in a place I’ve visited before or near my home town. I like to see if I recognize anything there. A nice tropical island setting would be nice right now so I can take a break from spring cleaning. haha!
I like futuristic setting but not so far out there that I can’t envision what would happen. A time period about 50 or so years from now is about all I can grasp. LOL
Hey, Robyn.
I really like small town settings and the rural feel, too. But even in a big city you can get the feeling of small town becasue it’s usually in one section of the city. I guess we a can to to the rooftops to see the stars.
Too far into the future doesn’t work for me either. Guess my imaginaiton won’t go that far!
Hi, Kim!
It’s great being here!
I’ve always made up my towns but my next proposal is for Savannah. I love the South and Savannah is terrific.
Visiting places there that everyone knows about, bringing in local ghosts and haunted places will be soooo much fun.
I cannot wait to write these two stories.
My O’Fallon books are on the Mississippi River and that’s been fun too.
I have 2 copies of The Way U Look Tonight (April ‘06) to give away. Just email me at DianneCastell@hotmail.com and I’ll send you a copy.
Hugs, Dianne
Futuristic is good! I really enjoy the “In Death” series by J D Robb that is set in the New York of the future. The technology is believable and the setting doesnt detract from the story. Too far into the future and you are writing science fiction!
I don’t like futuristic books either…BUT I do like book settings in small towns. Or the setting begins in the city and then the characters take a vacation or job to the country.
I also think Savannah is a great setting for book…so many possibilities. However, I feel guilty not mentioning St. Louis, MO(with historic graveyards, the first US capital & the Lewis/Clark ect. in St. Charles, other historic areas including the brewery and tons of haunted mansions …so there I mentioned it .
Hey, sorry I’ve been away. I have a book due April 1 and am going nuts.
Right now I have 2 Kims, Jennifer, Kathleen. Robyn, do you want a book? Can you resend your addy to make sure I have it. DianneCatell@hotmail.com
Thanks, gals, for the support!!!
It means a lot!!
I will try and get The Way U Look Tonight to you asap.
Hugs!!
Dianne
BTW…
The Way U Look Tonight is set on the Mississippi River.
My nex proposal to Kate Duffy is set in Savannah.
I looooove the South. and the West…Texas.
Cowboy stories are so much fun.
I have an anthology out with Rosemary Laurey and Karne Kelley in Sept called Texas Bad Boys.
All three stories are connected and it’s a bit of a mystery…mostly it’s fun and sexy
Hugs, Dianne
I love stories written about small towns in the South. I’ve never been there but my Dad was born in Mississippi and so stores written there have always interested me.
It depends on the kind of story being written as to where the setting should be. Of course the most important thing is the story.
I don’t much care where a story is set as long as the characters and situations are compelling. The first romances I read, in middle school, were Regencies by Barbara Cartland, so I will also have a special place in my heart for novels set in Regency England.
I’ve read your books already I’m hanging out for the last one myself those O’Fallon boys are irresistable. Have to say I’m loving the strong heroines too, not to mention how funny it is to see grown men panic when the baby cries hehe
Hey, Jennifer!
So glad you joined Scamps and Vamps ScampsVampsandSpicyRomance@yahoogroups.com!
I haven’t welcomed you properly, I’ve got this book due by Saturday and it’s down to the wire!
Great seeing you there!

Hi, Carol!
The story is the most important part and sometimes the setting is like a character because where it’s set plays such an important part . You can do things there that you can’t do anywhere else. Like New York.
Savannah is a beautiful old southern town. I like it better than Charleston because it’s smaller. You can walk one end to the other. But I hate, hate, hate the bugs!
I will have to use those bugs somehow in the story! Gross!
Dianne
hey, Megan!
I’m thrilled you like the O’Fallon series!
The Way U Look Tonight comes out this week.
If I haven’t sent you a copy send me your addy and I’ll send you one.
Hugs, Dianne
LOL Dianne, I hate bugs, too! I’ve had people tell me about how many there are in the South! I guess they just don’t die in the winter like they do in the North.
I didn’t realize Savannah was a small town. I’ve never been there but I love the name. Maybe someday I’ll get the chance to visit it.
LOL, Carol! Nope! Most places in the Deep South dont get cold enough or stay cold long enought to kill off the nasty little pests so we get an over-abundance of insects in places! At least that is true in the part of Georgia where I live!!
I think today is my last day here. Rats!
I’m so very sorry I haven’t been around more, usually I’m better than this but I have a book due April 1 and going totally nuts!!
Thanks to all of you for coming to visit and writing me. I loved chatting with you.

How about the Swiss Alps where the story of Heidi took place. I loved that story. Try a story set in
Scandinavia - blue eyed blondes.
March 18th, 2006 at 7:35 pm
What about the future?? Are you all into furturistic settings??
I cannot imagine what things will be like two-hunded years from now.
