  1. Cheryl Says:

I love alpha males. I don’t mind that they take control (at least in the stories I read). Most men are stronger and I can deal with them taking charge in those situations. It only gets on my nerves if they take charge because the heroine is portrayed as less intelligent than the hero. I hope that makes sense.

  2. Kathleen Says:

That makes sense Cheryl! And I agree. I like to read hero’s that are alpha males…strong, smart, funny, and a “protector” but that does not mean that the herione is a fragile woman who has to have an alpha male around to lead her life.

Also, please no steroid alpha males…that is too unrealistic for me!

  3. Danny Says:

I really love Alpha males, but it drives me crazy if the heroine meek and says yes to everything the hero does. As you say the hero must be strong, smart and protective, but not too dominant. He need a heroine that sometimes stands up against him. The best Alphas are those with a tiny beta touch inside.

  4. Maureen Says:

I like alpha males because they will act. If they’re interested in a woman they will do something about it. Also, they’re protective of the people they care about, which has both good and bad points. The thing I don’t like about them is their unwillingness to express their emotions. Talking about their feelings is not something that comes easy to the alpha male.

  5. Pat Says:

I like alpha males but with some beta is the word? Strong characters ususally make for a stronger story. Dont like it if they get TOO overbearing and like the other ladies, dont like a meek heroine.

Congrats on being a top pick

  6. Melissa Says:

Welcome to AR, Barbara! And, congratulations on your Top Pick!
I like alpha males as long as they aren’t abusive in any way!
I agree with Danny. Well said, Danny!

  7. Barbara Dunlop Says:

Thanks, everyone! I’m also partial to smart alpha males who take action. And I really love playing around with their protective instincts. For the most part, when my heroes get angry, it’s because they’re frightened for somebody close to them.

As Maureen said, alphas have trouble showing emotions. Sometimes you can’t look at what they’re saying, but what they’re doing as they’re saying it. On the surface, they may be shouting, but they’re also shooting at the bad guy or boarding up the windows or wrapping the sprained ankle.

Emotions through actions I love that!

  8. Robyn Says:

I definitely agree with some Beta thrown in with
the Alpha. I love the protective Alpha so long as he doesn’t think he is ‘everything’.

  9. Karen Says:

I agree with the ladies here. You need a little Beta thrown in for balance. Some heroes are too alpha almost to the point of being obnoxious.

  10. Cherie Japp Says:

I really enjoy alpha males but it is even better when there is some beta thrown in. I dislike it when the heroines are wishy washy or do stupid things. I don’t want the alpha male to look like he is usually the right one while the heroine is so compassionate that she makes decisions contrary to what he advises and ends up aiding his enermies instead of him. I read a book just recently where a heroine did that and it really annoyed me because instead of helping she made things worse and ended up endangering her guy instead of helping. Not to mention almost getting herself killed. That drives me crazy!

  11. Melissa Says:

Barbara, I went to that conference in New York in 2004. I’m sorry I missed you! I wish I could go to Atlanta. *sigh*
I think men in general have trouble showing emotion. Drives me crazy.

  12. Crystal Says:

I like alpha males because they are strong, take charge men. I agree that you do need to have a little beta thrown in. It does frustrate me that alpha guys have trouble showing others how they feel.

  13. kim h Says:

    i like it.

  14. Jennifer Y. Says:

I love alpha males and reading about them.

  15. Helen Mac Says:

Yes, I too agree - you need some Beta in there to even out the temperment. Sometimes an alpha is too strong that he gets annoying. He needs the love of a good woman to bring him to be a better person.

  16. KimW Says:

I love alpha heroes but only in the stories I read. Not in real life. haha! I like them to be tough on the outside but warm on the inside.

Congratulations on your top pick! Have fun at the conference.

  17. Barbara Dunlop Says:

Alpha with a little beta thrown in. I hear you all, and I’ll definitely keep that in mind! I tend to have humor in my stories, and I hope that softens the hero a little bit. I particularly like it when a guy lets himself be self-deprecating. I guess I don’t like a hero who takes himself too seriously.

And now I’m going to wander over to the chocolate discussion and post the Nanaimo Bar recipe. After that, I pack for Atlanta!

    Barbara

  18. Melissa Says:

Have a safe and fun trip, Barbara!

  19. Danny Says:

    Barbara, have fun in Atlanta!

  20. Kathleen Says:

Have a great time in Atlanta!!

  21. Melissa Says:

*sniff* Who will we talk to now since Barbara has gone to Atlanta?

  22. Kathleen Says:

    She’ll be back soon!!

  23. Barbara Dunlop Says:

    Hi, everyone.

I had a fabulous time in Atlanta! The hotel was beautiful, made even better by the gracious and helpful staff. In fact, the city seemed to be full of incredibly friendly people. I swear, you couldn’t look confused for more than ten seconds before somebody stepped up to help.

I can’t wait to go back. Or maybe I’ll set a book there…

I think my Tell a Tale time is up. Thanks to everyone for participating!
