Question #3

My chef hero is a bit out of the norm in that there aren’t many chef heroes out there. Do you have a preference for heroes with certain occupations or, conversely, are there hero careers you don’t like to read?

  1. Danny Says:

    Hi Helen,

I love to read firefighter books, but the reason could be that I come from a firefighter family.

Although I don’t really have a preference with a certain occupations. It’s not the occupation that makes the hero special, it’s his character

  2. Pat Says:

    Hi Helen,
Since I have this book, dont put me in for the draw for it. But wanted to comment - I agree with Danny but do like occupations like: cops, men who work with their hands - carpenters - construction, cowboys, successful businessmen.

  3. kim h Says:

i love firefighters, but i would love to see sports agents.

  4. Nichole Says:

I agree that’s it the character of the hero not the occupation, but I still can’t resist a firefighter, cop, construction worker (or any hardworking guy that works with his hands) & cowboys.

I can’t wait for Viva Las Bad Boys and I’m especially looking forward to the anthology mentioned on your site about 3 house rehab projects men and their tools. I’m desperately awaiting this one.

  5. Julie T. Says:

    Hello,
Like everyone has said, the main thing that draws me in is the development of the character as a whole. Having said that, when it comes down to occupation, I think I’d like to see more books that feature something a bit different.

I’d like to see a character who’s a professor, an investigative reporter, an author, or a musician. Then again, to really ramp up the testosterone level, I’m also kinda partial to baseball players and racecar drivers, as well.

  6. sharon Says:

definitely a character who has the characteristics of a real man and a hero who exhibits it to his employees ec. A successful businessman who is a mentor etc.

  7. ellie Says:

Yes, a cowboy whose entire being rests upon the vagaries of his land and animals. He has to combat weather and survive.

  8. pearl Says:

An individual who has integrity and honesty and he can be a success at what he believes in.

  9. joelle Says:

a real handyman whose livelihood depends upon his skill

  10. Kathleen Says:

I too am not influenced by a characters occupation. There are so many different occupations a character can have…what makes a character great is who they really are. A hero stands up for his family and friends, is honest, caring, has integrity and patience, and intelligence.

  11. Joanne V. Says:

I agree with the ladies pretty much about occupation. But I am partial to athletes - baseball, hockey, football players. Also men who work with their hands.

  12. Robyn Says:

Almost any occupation the hero has is good for me; it’s the story line and what he endures and does that is what makes the story. The occupation just sort of fits into the picture.

I, too, love cowboy stories, firefighters, doctors, criminal investigators, etc.

  13. Cheryl Says:

I have to agree with the general consensus, it’s the hero’s character that draws me in. That being said, I do like ranchers, construction workers, and law enforcement heros. Also, have a thing for heroes who are businessmen and show their professional side in public but reveal a bad-boy side of their personality to the heroine.

  14. Kathleen Says:

I agree w/ all the choices people have given! It doesn’t matter the job, it is who they are. I think any job can be used and still have a successful book..b/c of course the hero is a great guy all around.

  15. Helen Mac Says:

WHAT IS PINGING? I DONT THINK THERE IS ANY OCCUPATION THAT WOULD TURN ME OFF WHEN READING A BOOK.

  16. Maureen Says:

I like all kinds of heroes. A hero with an occupation that I am not familiar with is always interesting.

  17. Sanjay Says:

I like chef heros too. Well, in general I like hero who work with their hands and aren’t afraid of some hard labor. Somehow a financial guru isn’t as alluring as say a firefighter or a blue-collar worker. But that’s just me!

  18. Linda Says:

I would love to read a book with a firefighter, chef, teacher and a police officer :)

    Hugssss
    Linda.H.

  19. Helen L. Says:

I like the men who work with their hands or a policeman.

  20. Jess Says:

Any X-treme sport or the military

  21. Cherie Japp Says:

I kind of like a male character in a position of power whether he be an owner of a successful business, or a police chief, or royalty, magician or warrior. Those guys just tend to have self confidence and have mastered their emotions for the most part that I think it is very attractive.

  22. Kathleen Says:

    If I knew HelenMac I would tell you…but I don’t.

  23. Laurie G Says:

I have to agree that it’s not the job but the guy’s characteristics. I can’t resist alpha males whatever the occupation…doctor, lawyer, teacher, businessman, computer expert, soldier, policeman, firefighter….
It’s nice to have a change with the chef hero!! I’m open to other occupations farmer, electrician…I’m not too thrilled about mortitians!

  24. KimW Says:

It doesn’t really matter to me what the hero does in life. If the story is written well, I’ll fall in love with any of them. They can even be jobless. If I’d have to narrow it down, I’d say lawyers and detectives. I wonder why that is? lol

  25. HelenKay Says:

Nichole - Thank you! The rehab anthology is done and turned in. I have to admit that I kind of love all three heroes there. One is a lawyer (I like him anyway). One is a business man. The other is a young work-with-his-hands type. IN that one, the heroine is a bit older and…well, I love them.

Helen - No idea what pinging is, but maybe it’s good we’re not allowed to do it…
