I like it as long as it’s not overdone. I hate the utter opposites who have nothing in common but lust, who fight all the time, can’t agree on anything but getting in each other’s pants.
But differences in personality really make for interesting books, interesting fights, and very interesting make-ups.
I agree with Katie. I enjoy the opposites attract in storylines. That bit of tension that gets your attention, then mellows out as the characters get to know each other.
Like Katie said, I like opposites attract scenarios as long as they aren’t too extreme. In life, these two people can complete each other in so many ways as long as mutual respect and understanding of the differences is acknowledged.
I like opposites attract stories. For me, when 2 people are too alike, it seems kinda boring! There needs to be some differences so each person can try new things.
I like them up to a point. Too often writer’s let the opposites fight on so long it gets tiresome before they finally accept they love each other. It ruins the story for me.
I like them, although they have to have something in common (besides lust) to make the relationship believeable. I don’t like it when the hero is too dominant and the heroine too submissive, though, I prefer when they are both strong.
I absolutely love it - feisty and witty — the sexual tension drives you crazy because you can’t figure out how they are going to get over their issures..
I too like the opposites attract theme. Disagreement can resolve in some unique ways of making up. Sparks fly! Chemistry takes over. Passion wins!
Unfortunately there are issues which lead to incompatibility. I wouldn’t want someone who hates children to end up with someone who loves them… that kind of opposite puts kids inthe middle and leads to divorce. THE STORY LINE HAS TO BE REALSITIC.
The tension of “opposites attract” keeps a story going. Especially with a good dose of humor, outragous banter, a unique setting and strong characters, the pull back and forth draws you into the characters lives and keeps you coming back to see what they’ll do next.
I love opposites attract because I am living that love story. I’ve been married 27 years to a man who is totally opposite of me. Yet because of it, he has changed and is now leading boys in our Community. He is a Sectional Commander, Divisional Staff and leader in our church. If we were the same, there would be nothing to excite a person.
I think that’s the biggest thing with “opposites attract” stories, is the fun give and take, the constant pull. Treasa A mentioned humor and outrageous banter as great aspects of opposites attract stories. Including witty banter and humorous situations are important to me because what makes life fun is being able to laugh. Don’t get me wrong, I love weaving high sexual tension and creating intense situations in my books, but I also always include both humor and witty dialogue in my stories. I do so for tension relief and to show another layer of depth to the characters that may not have been seen up to that point in the story.
Jane, what a great story in how opposites attract can work very well!
I agree with everyone here that said opposites attract keep the sparks going!
I love opposites attract stories. In fact, its that friction that often makes for an interesting read. Because lets face it, if the lady walks up to the guy and they fall in love and are married the same day…its a little boring. You want to make the guy work for the lady’s attention. Or visa-versa. Put a little adventure and spice in the story line. To humor the reader and writer with come-backs and wit.
Carla hit the nail on the head…the clashes can be SUCH a turn on!
Karen, I agree…think how boring it would be if you could literally guess what your man was thinking all the time, maybe even before he knows…wait, but MAN if he could guess what we were thinking like the husband on the TV show HEROES did tonight…wooohooo! *g*
It’s almost a must in some ways, because it plays a huge part in making a relationship actually work… I mean how boring would it be to be with a clone of yourself in the opposite gender?
I must say though, I’ve been known to bang a book against the wall, if an author carries that too far, and the heroine starts annoying me to no end. If you dare stick a good man with an ultra-high-maintenance-whining-princess-in-everpresent-distress, I might be inclined to test my vocal cords…
It can work if it is passionate and not annoying. I don’t like reading about constant fighting but a little friction is exciting, otherwise it can become boring. I mean, how much of a story would it be if the heroine just fell into the hero’s lap right off the bat?

I just love them, but they shouldn’t be too extreme.

I like the opposites attract story. As long as everyone is having fun and no harm is done to anyone it is fine.

I like the opposites attract because each character can bring out a different side to the other person.

I like the opposites attract idea. It is especially fun when over time you see them slowly picking up some of those opposite habits.

I like them. Sparks usually fly. And they complement one another.

Patrice does it in spades.

I love the collision of fire and ice. They complete each other and can have oh! so much fun!.
When you think about it, you see that real fun begins with new stuff and hey! how can one resist the other side of oneself?!

Exactly! Polar opposites can have some great fireworks as well as comic moments!

You won’t find any wimpy heroines in my books…gah, my alpha males would stomp all over them, otherwise! LOL!
Nothing is hotter than a heat of the moment “moment”, be it a kiss or an in-your- face, “I want you, damnit, don’t you see that” declaration.
