Question #1

Often, young writers are advised not to deviate from tried and true locations for their settings, for example, London for historical novels. Do you enjoy unusual settings? Or do you prefer to stick with the familiar? What are some of your favorite novel locations?

  1. Ducky Says:

I enjoy more unusual settings which would explain why I enjoy reading sci-fi/fantasy novels. It allows me (as the reader) to use my imagination to visual it based on the author’s description. If the location is set in a place where I’m more familiar it doesn’t lessen my interest but my involvement may be less.

A few of my favorite novel locations include any type of oriental location as well as island settings.

  2. Carol Says:

The location really isn’t important to me as long as it fits the story. Both the unusual settings and familiar settings are fine as long as the description lets me picture the place and what the characters are doing there.

  3. Teresa Warner Says:

The location for me in a book is very important. It let’s you get the feel for a place that you may not have ever been and have always wanted to visit. An example would be like the locations that took place in the book the Davinci Code. Those are some of the places I’ve always wanted to go but haven’t been able to see, but I can see them through the author’s eyes.

  4. Maureen Says:

I enjoy reading about different locations. The most important thing is how well the author brings the place to life. Occasionally I will read a book with a city as the setting that I have never read about before. A different location can make a good story even better.

  5. Dena Says:

I love unusual settings that you learn about in fantasy and paranormal books. The usual settings are fine too,a few of my favorites are Scotland,England, and Ireland for historicals. If the writer really knows the setting and brings actual places and information into the book I think it adds a lot to the story and makes it more interesting.

  6. RobynL Says:

I think any setting works for me because upon reading the story I am transported to the ‘place’ and am the ‘characters’ most often or at least there with the characters. I become involved in the story.

  7. Julia Says:

I love unusual and exotic settings like Egypt and India, and I wish there were more romances set there. I’m glad I discovered a couple of authors in the past year that used them. However, I enjoy any kind of settings, and I don’t mind seen the same ones again.
