I think erotic is something that is visually or literary stimulating but is still R rated. I think erotic can occur in many form, it depends on the eye of the beholder. I prefer it a bit subtle because my imagination can definitely fill in the blanks. I don’t think it has to be explicit to be erotic. Its the imagery that the writer spins for the reader is what makes it erotic.
I too dont think everything has to be spelled out. Imagination is a wonderful thing and it is up to the writer to lead us down the path to stimulation.
I’m with Ducky and Pat I need enough detail to lead my imagination down it’s own little path. I always explain the difference between romantica and erotica as this Erotica has words in it I wouldn’t say to my grandmother.
Erotic doesn’t have to be explicit. There is something particularly alluring in seeing a body particularly clothed where the body in a similar stance fully nude may not be as striking. In a book, some allusion can be erotic as well. Honestly though, it depends upon my mood and sometimes I want explicit.
Ducky and Pat, I agree. Wonderfull way to put things.
Ouch. Megan. I disagree with your definition of Erotica. LOL
But then again, I’ve been writing Erotica since before it became popular. True erotica is not always explicit. Much like photo’s or sculptures, erotica can be subtle and still extremely erotic. It all depends onthe author. Not the genre.
LLL For sure. Moods have a lot to do with what you find erotic at certain times.
WoW! I am glad you here for this month’s Tell Tale very good topic’s.
What do you think is erotic? Does it have to be explicit to be erotic?
Answer: For me erotica is something between lovers where you can share your fantasies together and just be open with out any worries. Erotica doesn’t always have to be explicit just something betweent he lovers where they shouldn’t be shy to open up to one another and share there desires and dreams together or there fantasies that they want to come real.
You know, sometimes I find explicit to be erotic, but it doesn’t have to be “hard-core” to be stimulating. One of the most unbearably erotic scenes I read recently was a Regency novel where the man simply stripped off his gloves, ran his fingers over the woman’s wrist and ran his fingers under her glove before slipping them off and carressing her hands. That was one hot scene!
Truly, the mind and imagination are the most powerful sexual stimulants.
For me erotica is the desire…not just the actual act, but also the anticipation and feelings associated.
And, like previously mentioned, I think the readers/viewers imagination plays a large part.
For me, something does not have to be explicit to be erotic. I am a visual person and so something as simple as my hubby walking in fresh from the shower with a towel covering him is erotic to me. He does not have to be fully naked to be sexy to me. Just that hint is enough and then my mind takes over from there.
When I thick erotic the first thing that comes to mind is “Forbidden” whether it be in thoughts, words or deeds. (Could be my Catholic upbringing!!) To me, erotic is at a higher level of stimulation… kinkier, wilder, stetching the limits.
No, I don’t think that it has to be more explicit, but I think that it tends to be that way.
The right setting, a few choice words, along with a reader’s vivid imagination… can be a very erotic experience.
Laurie very good point. It’s always the best time to do things during the right moment and setting I agree with you. The mind is very powerful let your imagination go wild

Hi Linda! Yes! being able to share fantasies is a hugely erotic. Openness is a big thing.
Angie. I agree 100% Sometimes it’s the tension, and the meaning behind the touch that makes it so very erotic. Good Call!

Hello Sasha,
