Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time rolling on the ground with men who think a stiffy represents personal growth. from Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich
“The combination of a horse galloping far too fast, a muddy lane with a curve, and a lady pedestrian is never a good one.” from The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt.

Novalee Nation, seventeen, seven months pregnant, thirty-seven pounds overweight - and superstitious abouot sevens - shifted uncomfortably in the seat of the old Plymouth and ran her hands down the curve of her belly. ~ WHERE THE HEART IS by Billie Letts
Well, Dena, that just means you are so anxious to jump into the book that you don’t notice the fabulous first lines! LOL
Hey, those were two great lines from books I’ve never read Christy H. (and I’ve read tons of Heather’s books — just not that one) Nice to read a surprise or two!
Here’s one of my favorites that you may not have read yet:
Once there lived a woman whose beloved hills were alive with the sounds of death. ~
from Shadow Lines - the Madonna Key series by Carol Stephenson
Conlan waved a hand in front of the portal and briefly wondered whether its magic would even recognize a warrior who hadn’t passed through its gateway for more than seven years. Atlantis Rising by Alyssa Day
You know, finding just the right balance to capture people’s attention in a flash is tough. Anyone want to try making up their own? It can be fun to play with.
Here’s one I made up:
Regan Wilson took one quick last look at the crappy rental car, jumped in the shallow creek and ran for her life through the terrifying night.
(actually, this comes from my first Night Guardian book: Shadow Force)
“Where on earth am I?’-”Not Your Average Cowboy”- Christine Wenger
“Allie McGuffey knew a yuppie bar was a lousy place to find a hero, but she was desperate, so she had to make do with what she had on hand.”-”Charlie All Night” -Jennifer Cruise
I’m not talented enough to make up one of my own ~ that’ why I’m a reader, not a writer. lol
My house is old, and rambling, and in some disrepair, and I think that it is faintly haunted: a cold spot forming inexplicably on the stairway, a scuttling in the hall. ~ THE DEAD CAT BOUNCE by Sarah Graves

Nice line, Teresa. It put me right into the story immediately. And I think that’s as much a trick as capturing your attention.
