  1. Little Lamb Lost Says:

Pride and Prejudice: “It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.”

  2. Linda Conrad Says:

Okay, that classic certainly qualifies as one of the best! How about something newer?

Here’s one: “Most people don’t take cheerleading seriously. If they only knew…”

Care to guess where it came from?

  3. Linda Conrad Says:

Here are a couple more of my favorites:

“Ah, hell, it broke.” (love it!) from Baby I’m Yours by Catherine Mann

Dark as night and fleet of foot, the wolf raced under a hunter’s moon. from Enchanted by Nora Roberts

Lately I’ve been spending a lot of time rolling on the ground with men who think a stiffy represents personal growth. from Hard Eight by Janet Evanovich

  4. Minna Says:

“The combination of a horse galloping far too fast, a muddy lane with a curve, and a lady pedestrian is never a good one.” from The Raven Prince by Elizabeth Hoyt.

  5. Linda Conrad Says:

Oh, I love it! Elizabeth is a wonderful writer!

BTW, the cheerleading quote above is from Linda Howard’s To Die For

Here is one from Sandra Brown: The grave was substandard. from Chill Factor.

  6. Marilyn Says:

I knew the cheerleading quote! That’s one of my fave books. Blair is soooooooo blonde.

A first line that stands out in my mind is from Jenny’s Castle by Elizabeth Sinclair. The line is “Coldhearted bitch!” Kinda makes the reader stand up and take notice.

And I love that book by Catherine Mann too.

  7. Linda Conrad Says:

Hey, I love that line from Jenny’s Castle. I’ve never read the book, but now I want to look for it!

    Here’s another one:
At about 0530 that very morning, Ken “Wildcard” Karmody became a terrorist. from Out of Control by Suzanne Brockmann

  8. Dena Says:

I can’t think of any except, It was the best of times it was the worst of times.

  9. Christy H. Says:

What was it about the night and the little places where secrets lurked that caused unease to stir in the human heart? ~ KILLING KELLY by Heather Graham

Novalee Nation, seventeen, seven months pregnant, thirty-seven pounds overweight - and superstitious abouot sevens - shifted uncomfortably in the seat of the old Plymouth and ran her hands down the curve of her belly. ~ WHERE THE HEART IS by Billie Letts

  10. Linda Conrad Says:

Well, Dena, that just means you are so anxious to jump into the book that you don’t notice the fabulous first lines! LOL

Hey, those were two great lines from books I’ve never read Christy H. (and I’ve read tons of Heather’s books — just not that one) Nice to read a surprise or two!

Here’s one of my favorites that you may not have read yet:

Once there lived a woman whose beloved hills were alive with the sounds of death. ~
from Shadow Lines - the Madonna Key series by Carol Stephenson

  11. Teresa W. Says:

Conlan waved a hand in front of the portal and briefly wondered whether its magic would even recognize a warrior who hadn’t passed through its gateway for more than seven years. Atlantis Rising by Alyssa Day

  12. Linda Conrad Says:

Nice line, Teresa. It put me right into the story immediately. And I think that’s as much a trick as capturing your attention.

Here’s another one I just love:

It was a find day for a hanging. from Lord Jack by Hope Tarr

  13. Linda Conrad Says:

You know, finding just the right balance to capture people’s attention in a flash is tough. Anyone want to try making up their own? It can be fun to play with.

    Here’s one I made up:

Regan Wilson took one quick last look at the crappy rental car, jumped in the shallow creek and ran for her life through the terrifying night.
(actually, this comes from my first Night Guardian book: Shadow Force)

  14. Laurie G Says:

“Where on earth am I?’-”Not Your Average Cowboy”- Christine Wenger

“Allie McGuffey knew a yuppie bar was a lousy place to find a hero, but she was desperate, so she had to make do with what she had on hand.”-”Charlie All Night” -Jennifer Cruise

  15. Christy H. Says:

I’m not talented enough to make up one of my own ~ that’ why I’m a reader, not a writer. lol

My house is old, and rambling, and in some disrepair, and I think that it is faintly haunted: a cold spot forming inexplicably on the stairway, a scuttling in the hall. ~ THE DEAD CAT BOUNCE by Sarah Graves
