Rugged, Rich and Ruthless

I always struggle with titles for my books. Usually I apply an interim tag hoping that before the book’s done something cool and clever will strike me. Usually, it doesn’t. (Sigh.)

When I wrote my PRINCES OF THE OUTBACK books, their working titles were simple. Book 1 was known as RUGGED, book 2 was RICH, book 3, RUTHLESS. I wouldn’t have minded if those single words had appeared on the covers. Not cool or clever but I kinda like the succinct feel of them, plus those single words represented a whole lot of what went on between the covers.

I didn’t get the one-word titles but I was quietly chuffed that the titles chosen included those adjectives, and so I decided to write my Tell Tale about why those R-words fit.

Book #1: THE RUGGED LONER is set in the hard, harsh, remote outback of Australia. I chose the rugged setting to match Tomas Carlisle, the hard, remote hero who’d isolated himself from family, friends and his emotions. And I gave him a heroine and a situation that would provoke the kind of harsh confrontations that went with the “rugged” theme. Let’s just say that the sensuality in this book is more intense than romantic.

Book #2: THE RICH STRANGER starts in the outback, but that setting only serves as a contrast to Rafe Carlisle, the rich stranger who (literally) falls from the sky and into Cat McConnell’s paddock. Rafe is rich in looks, in luck, in charm, and the action soon shifts to Las Vegas and then to a Sydney harbour-side penthouse. This book is all about riches and seduction, about luck and gambling, and ultimately about which wealth really matters.

Book #3: THE RUTHLESS GROOM stars the eldest of the Carlisles, Alex, who takes his first-born sense of responsibility pretty darn seriously. He’s a ruthless man in business and ruthless about doing what he considers the right thing. But his carefully laid plans go awry (and don’t you love it when that happens to an alpha?) when he is stranded with the wrong woman in a ruthless storm. This one is all about control and letting go.

So, although my Carlisle half-brothers are each faced with the same situation—that afore-mentioned will clause—each tackles it with a different plan and in a different setting…although I have to say with the same reluctance! And therein lies the attraction of that terms-of-will premise, don’t you think? Take a strong, alpha male (or in my case, three of them!) and force him to act against his will. Because the edict comes from beyond the grave, from someone he loved and respected deeply, how can he fight it?

I loved planning these books, I loved writing these books, and I’d love to chat with you about them.

Question #1

How important is a title when you’re choosing a book? Have you ever purchased a book because of its cool or clever title?

Question #2

The Carlisle brothers, as described above, represent three distinct archetypes—which do you prefer:

a) the rugged, brooding, wounded loner?
b) the rich, charming, seductive stranger?
c) the cool, controlled, ruthless alpha?

Do you have a favourite example of your favourite hero type?

Question #3

I chose rugged, rich and ruthless, but what other R-words might I have gone with? Let’s have some fun and see how many we can list…
