The Sisters of the Silver Dollar
GREETINGS…please come meet my new family, the Radonovic clan. With a Romani, or Gypsy, heritage, they may seem a bit…different…at first glance, but they hold dear the values that are important to all families: love, mutual respect, truth (most of the time) and, of course, dance.
Dance?
Ah…well, when Alexandra, Elizabeth, Katherine and Grace (do you see a certain…um…royal…theme there?) were little girls, they’d dance for their father, Ernst, who some called the “Gypsy King.” Larger-than-life, with a generous smile and pockets filled with silver dollars (he was a pit-boss at a Las Vegas casino), Ernst would toss coins to the Sisters of the Silver Dollar, as he called his daughters’ amateur dance troupe whenever they performed.
Four sisters. Their father’s Gypsy Princesses, none of whom is holding her breath waiting for her prince to arrive. Well, actually, that’s a lie. Because Grace knows there’s a prince in her future. Why? Because her mother, Yetta, the seer of the family, has foreseen a “prophecy” for each of her daughters.

Las Vegas restaurateur Grace Radonovic would do anything for her family – even gamble her inheritance on a risky business venture with her late father’s trusted friend. She’s smart, savvy and – after a near-miss with a two-timing frog – cautious of all things romantic.
Still, her mother’s prophesy — You will marry a prince – but you will have to save him first – has her debating his royalty potential…
Unfortunately, the lawyer turned casino owner is more wild card than king of hearts. And he’s more attracted to Grace’s dowry to help pay off his blackmailer than the curvy brunette herself. Even the Radonovic matriarch feels something is amiss. So when long-lost cousin Nikolai Sarna visits the Gypsy compound, Grace can’t help but wonder whether he’s her destiny.
But there’s something Nick isn’t telling her – a secret that could land Grace in unexpected danger. Is he her prince-in-the-making? Or her family’s worst nightmare?
BETTING ON GRACE (now on sale) is a Signature Select Saga. It introduces readers to three more stories from Harlequin American Romance:
In May, Kate’s story: ONE DADDY TOO MANY
The prophecy: You can’t escape your destiny nor avoid the past…when the two intersect.
Kate trusted one man who let her down. Now, just as she opens her heart to another, her daughter’s father returns. Which man is the safe bet for a woman who doesn’t gamble?
In August, Liz’s story: BRINGING BABY HOME
The prophecy: A man of shadows, a child of light. You will only be able to save one.
Liz is a woman who prides herself on never asking for help, but now she’s about to lose everything. David is a man with no past who sees the chance for a future. The trouble is that helping Liz bring her baby home might also cost him his life.
In November, Alex’s story: THE QUIET CHILD
The prophecy: A child’s laughter can heal a wounded heart, if first you heal the child.
Pre-school teacher Alex is used to loving other people’s children, but she never expected to be asked to care for Mark’s little boy–especially since he’s the child who came between them.
I’ve been living with the Radonovic family for well over a year now. I even traveled to Las Vegas to visit their home and some of the places that show up in all four books. I included a little travelogue called “Sin City Beckons” in the Bonus Features in BETTING ON GRACE. But there wasn’t room for photos, so I thought you might like to see a few shots.

Yes, this is a cemetery. Doesn’t everybody who goes to Vegas head straight to the nearest cemetery? Believe it or not, this place wasn’t that easy to find, but since Ernst is buried here, I felt it was important.

There’s a suspense element in BETTING ON GRACE. As I like to the tell men who pick up my book because of its sexy cover, “Shots are fired.” As a matter of fact, that action scene takes place right here at Lake Mojave.

Red Rock Canyon is mentioned in Grace’s book. She and I both had a nightmare about it. Go figure. It’s really gorgeous, by the way. Makes you wonder, “Vegas? What Vegas?”

Nick and Grace ride the Big Shot atop the Stratosphere. That shot didn’t come out so great, but here’s another ride you’d have to be crazy to try. 800-feet above the Strip. What’s not to love?

Food is important to my Rom family. Grace and Kate own Romantique, a fabulous restaurant. So, naturally, I had to do some serious food investigation when I was researching this book, right? This was my dessert at AquaKnox. To die for!
Yep, you guessed it — writing is a tough job. Personally, I’m just here for the food. Oh, and the dress code works for me, too.
If you’re curious about what it’s like to write six books under contract (four of them connected stories with overlapping deadlines) just visit my blog.

Now, let’s talk! At the end of each week, one commenter will win a copy of Debra’s October Signature Select WINDOW TO YESTERDAY!
Week 1 Question
Nikolia Sarna, the hero of BETTING ON GRACE, starts out undercover. His real name is Nick Lightner. He lies to her regularly. Grace not only forgives him, she takes a bullet for him. So, how bad is too bad? When does a character reach the point where he’s unforgivable?
Week 2 Question
While writing Liz’s story, BRINGING BABY HOME (August 2006), I needed to research foreign adoptions. There are some heartwarming and heartbreaking stories online about people who have looked abroad to adopt. Almost everyone I’ve talked to since either knows someone or has a family member who has adopted a child from another land. What are your feelings on the subject? There’s a prize in store for the most moving adoption story.
Week 3 Question
Got gravy? Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I have food on my mind. The Radonovic family gathers at Romantique for Thanksgiving. Kate, who is head chef at Romantique, tells her story in ONE DADDY TOO MANY, my first American Romance due out in may. Several house recipes will be on the menu (and can be found in the bonus features at the back of BETTING ON GRACE), but I’ll give a prize to the best turkey and gravy recipe submitted. (And as a side-note, every year we have the “deep fry” question. Turkey fryers — are you for ‘em or agin ‘em?)
Week 4 Question
I’m busy writing the 4th book in the Sisters of the Silver Dollar saga. This is Alex’s story, THE QUIET CHILD, which will be out a year from now. The story takes place around the holidays and features a troubled little boy who’s seen too much and heard too much to ever believe in Santa – or love. Do you remember when – if ever – you stopped believing in the spirit of Santa? My last prize will include a special Christmas ornament and a book for the person with the best story about how you found out there wasn’t a Santa Claus.
